What a Will does, and what happens without one
A Will is a legal document that decides what happens to your money, property and possessions after your death. It lets you choose who inherits, who looks after your children, who carries out your wishes, and even what happens to your pets and personal treasures.
Without a valid Will, the rules of intestacy decide everything instead. Those rules follow a strict legal order that takes no account of your wishes:
- Unmarried partners inherit nothing automatically, however long you've been together.
- Stepchildren you haven't legally adopted are not included.
- You have no say over who becomes guardian to children under 18.
- Your estate may pay more inheritance tax than it needs to.
A properly drafted Will fixes all of this. It's one of the most important documents you'll ever sign, and one of the most affordable pieces of professional help you can buy.

Two matching Wills for couples (married or not), typically leaving everything to each other and then to the same beneficiaries, such as your children.

When time matters (before surgery, travel or during illness), we can prepare and complete a valid Will at short notice, including same-week visits where possible.

Small change to an existing Will? A codicil can update it without starting again. For bigger changes (marriage, divorce, a new home), a fresh Will is usually safer, and we'll tell you honestly which you need.

Why not just write my own Will?
You can; it's perfectly legal. But a Will only works if it's worded precisely and executed correctly, and the person it fails is never you: it's your family, at the worst possible time. The most common problems we see with homemade and template Wills are:
- Invalid witnessing: the wrong witnesses, or signing done in the wrong order, can invalidate the entire Will. A beneficiary who witnesses your Will loses their inheritance.
- Missing residuary clause: anything not specifically mentioned falls under intestacy rules.
- Unclear wording: ambiguous gifts cause family disputes and legal costs.
- Out-of-date documents: marriage revokes a Will; many people don't know this.

What is a mirror Will?
Two nearly identical Wills made by a couple, typically leaving everything to each other, then to the same beneficiaries such as your children. Each of you has your own separate, legally valid Will.
Can I write my own Will?
Legally yes, but wording mistakes or incorrect witnessing can make it partly or wholly invalid, and no one discovers the problem until it's too late to fix. Professional drafting costs a fraction of what a disputed estate does.
How long does it take?
If we visit you at home, you have a legal 14 day cooling off period before work starts, which you can waive in writing if you want your Will sooner. Our urgent Will service can complete a Will at short notice; call us to discuss your timescale.
Who should I choose as my executor?
Someone organised, willing and trustworthy: usually a family member or close friend, and you can appoint up to four. We'll talk you through the choice as part of your visit.
Do I need a new Will if I get married or divorced?
Marriage automatically cancels an existing Will in England and Wales (unless made in contemplation of that marriage). Divorce treats your ex as having died before you, which can leave gaps. Either way, it's time to review.
